These are several different patches for Finder 7.5.5 (for System 7.5.3). They will not work on any other version. Some day when someone gets around to it we’ll have a a single program to edit the Finder with a bunch of easy program choices. In the meantime, here are a bunch of patch options.
Add Quit Menu
Add “Reveal Original” Menu
No "alias" Extension
No Desktop Cleanup
No Zoom Rectangles
Edit Name Delays
Use the patches you want on a copy of your 7.5.5 Finder, hide your old Finder in another folder (save it temporarily in case you don't like the results of the patch), put the updated version in the System folder and restart.
Description:
Add Quit Menu
Adds a menu that allows you to quit the Finder. Useful to get a few extra K of memory available or if you want to edit (or patch) the Finder with something like ResEdit.
Add Reveal Original Menu
Adds a menu item under the “File” menu that allows you to quit the Finder (-R). Useful to get a few extra K of memory available or if you want to edit (or patch) the Finder with something like ResEdit.
No "alias" Extension
When you make an alias, the alias name is the same as the original (except for a space at the end)
No Desktop Cleanup
This disables the Special menu item "Clean Up Desktop". This is handy if you've got a lot of carefully placed icons on your desktop and want to avoid accidentally choosing this item and having to reposition them all.
No Zoom Rectangles
Gets rid of the slow window zooms in the Finder when you open or close a window.
Edit Name Delays
Four options from no delay when you click on a file name to edit it, to a very long delay. The “short” delay will still enable you to click on the text of an icon and drag it or double click on text to run it. Note: Since this patches CODE resources, the program will not patch a Finder that has already been patched (with a delay patch). In other words, you are stuck with whichever one you choose. I suggest that you try these first only on copies of a Finder to which you have not yet applied this patch (other patches are OK).
All of these patches were prepared with Michael Hecht’s excellent ResCompare program.
